New Operator Training

(This program has two parts)

Part 1 – Operator Training Theory: can be conducted in your facility or at a Johnston Training centre. It consists of a theory presentation divided into six modules, conducted in a classroom environment.

A brief description of each of these SAFETY ON THE MOVE program modules follows:

Module #1 Safety First
This module provides the foundation for the SAFETY ON THE MOVE training program and helps to motivate students to learn and follow safety procedures. To initiate discussion of general operator safety practices, current occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, guidelines, standards and other issues relating to accidents and injuries in the workplace are presented.

Module #2 Operator Checklist
The beginning of each day in a safe operator’s career begins with a truck safety inspection. In this module, safety apparel, visual truck inspection and operational checks are discussed and illustrated with a video segment and the SAFETY ON THE MOVE Operator Checklist.

Module #3 Lift Truck Travel
This module is designed to focus the operator’s attention on safe travel procedures in their workplace. The designated operating position and the proper operation of a truck when traveling, stopping or changing direction are presented through discussion and video illustration.

Module #4 Load Handling
Several materials handling concepts critical to safe operation are covered in this module including; centre of gravity, centrifugal force, momentum, load centre, load capacity and the vehicle specification plate. Operators learn how these concepts apply to materials handling, the problems that may be encountered in load handling and how these problems can be avoided.

Module #5 Ramps and Loading Docks
This module identifies the safe handling of a lift truck on a ramp or loading dock and explores the consequences of unsafe handling practices.

Module #6 Batteries
Batteries require special handling to avoid injury and accidents. This module is designed to demonstrate the impact batteries have on the overall safe operation of the vehicle.

The inexperienced or novice operator will also require additional hands-on operating instruction by a competent individual to master the skills needed to drive a lift truck on the job. This practical, on-site driver training is not included in the standard SAFETY ON THE MOVE program but is available if required.

Hands-on operator testing and evaluation is usually conducted in the days following the completion of the modules one through six of the SAFETY ON THE MOVE program.

Please refer to Part 2 for more information on hands-on instruction and evaluation.

We provide a factory trained and certified instructor along with all the appropriate materials for training your employees. This portion of the program concludes with a review of the information presented through individual completion of multiple-choice questionnaires. Participants must meet the mandatory 80% class performance standard. Unsuccessful participants may choose to repeat the training course in a mixed group session at a reduced rate.

Part 2 – Operator hands-on Training and evaluation: In this portion of the operator training program, your instructor visits your facility to offer hands-on training and to evaluate trainees on a one-to-one basis for safety practices and driver competency. Certificates are issued to those who meet the standards of theory and hands-on sessions.
